Seeing blood in your urine can be alarming. While it does not always mean something serious, it should never be ignored. Dr. Saurabh Singh, Urologist in Kanpur, explains the possible causes and when to seek medical attention.
What Is Hematuria?
Hematuria means the presence of blood in the urine. It can be visible to the naked eye (gross hematuria), turning urine pink, red or brown, or detectable only under a microscope (microscopic hematuria) during a routine test.
Common Causes
- Urinary tract infections
- Kidney or bladder stones
- Enlarged prostate (BPH)
- Kidney infections
- Vigorous exercise
- Certain medications, including blood thinners
- In rarer cases, tumours of the kidney, bladder or prostate
Why You Should Never Ignore It
Even a single episode of visible blood in the urine, with no pain, deserves evaluation. Painless hematuria can sometimes be an early sign of a urological cancer, and catching it early makes treatment far more effective.
How It Is Investigated
Evaluation typically includes a urine test, blood tests, an ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder, and sometimes a cystoscopy (a scope examination of the bladder) or a CT scan, depending on the findings and the patient’s risk factors.
When to See a Urologist Urgently
- Blood in urine with no obvious cause
- Blood clots in urine
- Blood in urine along with weight loss or fatigue
- Recurrent episodes of hematuria
