Kidney stones are often thought of as a predominantly male problem, but women get them too, and the symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for other conditions. Dr. Saurabh Singh, Urologist in Kanpur, explains what women should know.
Are Kidney Stones Different in Women?
The underlying causes and treatment options for kidney stones are largely similar between men and women. However, symptoms in women can sometimes overlap with gynaecological conditions or urinary tract infections, which can delay the correct diagnosis.
Common Symptoms
- Sharp pain in the back or side that may radiate to the lower abdomen
- Pain that may be mistaken for menstrual cramps or ovarian issues
- Burning sensation during urination
- Blood in the urine
- Nausea and vomiting with severe pain
- Frequent urge to urinate
Risk Factors Specific to Women
- Pregnancy, which can increase the risk of stone formation and complicate treatment options
- Recurrent urinary tract infections
- Dehydration, especially in hot climates
- Family history of kidney stones
- Certain dietary patterns
Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves a urine test, blood tests and an ultrasound, which is safe even during pregnancy. A CT scan may be used when more detail is needed and is safe to use when not pregnant.
Treatment Options
Small stones may pass on their own with adequate hydration and pain management. Larger stones often require minimally invasive procedures such as RIRS laser surgery, which allows for quick recovery with no external incisions.
