Kidney Stone Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

Medically reviewed by Dr. Saurabh Singh (M.B.B.S., M.S. General Surgery, M.Ch. Urology), Urologist & Andrologist, Kanpur. General information only — it does not replace a personal consultation. In an emergency go to the nearest hospital.

Kidney stones are one of the most common urological problems seen in Kanpur, and many patients delay treatment simply because they do not recognise the early warning signs. Dr. Saurabh Singh, Urologist and Andrologist in Kanpur, explains the symptoms that mean it is time to get checked.

1. Severe Pain in the Side or Back

The most classic symptom of a kidney stone is a sharp, cramping pain that starts in the back or side, below the ribs, and may radiate towards the lower abdomen and groin. This pain, often called renal colic, can come in waves of increasing intensity.

2. Pain or Burning During Urination

As a stone moves down towards the bladder, it can cause a burning sensation while passing urine. This is sometimes mistaken for a simple urinary tract infection, but if it persists, a stone could be the real cause.

3. Blood in the Urine

Pink, red or brown urine is a common sign of kidney stones. The stone can scratch the lining of the urinary tract as it moves, causing visible or microscopic bleeding.

4. Frequent Urge to Urinate

A stone sitting near the bladder or in the lower ureter can create a persistent urge to urinate, even when very little urine is passed each time.

5. Cloudy or Foul-Smelling Urine

This can indicate an infection associated with the stone, which needs prompt medical attention to prevent complications.

6. Nausea and Vomiting

The intense pain from a kidney stone often triggers nausea and vomiting, as the nerves of the kidneys and the digestive tract are closely connected.

7. Fever and Chills

If a kidney stone is accompanied by fever and chills, it may mean an infection has developed alongside the stone. This combination is considered a medical emergency and needs urgent evaluation.

When Should You See a Urologist?

If you notice any of these symptoms, especially severe pain, fever, or visible blood in urine, do not wait. Modern treatments like RIRS laser surgery allow most kidney stones to be removed with minimal downtime.
