Prostate Cancer Screening: Who Needs It and When

Medically reviewed by Dr. Saurabh Singh (M.B.B.S., M.S. General Surgery, M.Ch. Urology), Urologist & Andrologist, Kanpur. General information only — it does not replace a personal consultation. In an emergency go to the nearest hospital.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, and screening plays a key role in catching it early, when it is most treatable. Dr. Saurabh Singh, Uro-Oncology Surgeon in Kanpur, explains who should be screened and when.

Why Screening Matters

In its early stages, prostate cancer often has no symptoms at all. Screening helps detect changes before symptoms appear, when treatment options are simpler and outcomes are generally better.

Who Should Consider Screening?

  • Men aged 50 and above, as a general guideline
  • Men aged 45 and above with a family history of prostate cancer
  • Men with a close relative diagnosed with prostate cancer at a young age
  • Men experiencing urinary symptoms that warrant evaluation regardless of age

What Does Screening Involve?

Screening typically includes a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test and a digital rectal examination. These are simple, quick tests that help assess whether further evaluation is needed.

What If PSA Levels Are Elevated?

An elevated PSA does not automatically mean cancer. It can also be raised due to an enlarged prostate, infection, or recent activity. If levels are elevated, further evaluation, which may include an MRI or a biopsy, is used to determine the cause.

Symptoms That Should Never Be Ignored

  • Difficulty urinating or a weak stream
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Pain in the pelvis, hips or lower back that does not resolve
  • Unexplained weight loss

The Value of Early Detection

When detected early, prostate cancer often has excellent treatment outcomes, with options ranging from active surveillance for very low-risk cases to surgery or other targeted treatments for cases that need intervention.
