Testosterone plays a key role in men’s energy, mood and sexual health. When levels drop too low, it can affect quality of life in ways that are often overlooked. Dr. Saurabh Singh, Andrologist in Kanpur, explains the signs and treatment of low testosterone.
What Is Low Testosterone?
Testosterone naturally declines with age, but when levels fall below the normal range, it is called hypogonadism or low testosterone. This can happen due to ageing, underlying medical conditions, or problems with the testes or the hormonal signals from the brain.
Common Signs and Symptoms
- Reduced sexual desire
- Erectile difficulties
- Persistent fatigue and low energy
- Loss of muscle mass and increased body fat
- Mood changes, including irritability or low mood
- Difficulty concentrating
- Reduced body and facial hair growth
What Causes Low Testosterone?
- Natural age-related decline
- Obesity and metabolic conditions
- Chronic illnesses such as diabetes
- Testicular injury or conditions
- Certain medications
- Pituitary gland disorders
How It Is Diagnosed
Diagnosis requires a blood test to measure testosterone levels, usually done in the morning when levels are at their highest. A detailed symptom history and, sometimes, additional hormone tests help confirm the diagnosis and identify the underlying cause.
Treatment Options
Treatment is individualised and may include lifestyle changes such as weight management and exercise, addressing underlying conditions, or testosterone replacement therapy in confirmed, appropriate cases. Self-medicating with over-the-counter supplements without proper diagnosis is not recommended.
