How to Prevent Kidney Stones: Diet and Lifestyle Tips

Medically reviewed by Dr. Saurabh Singh (M.B.B.S., M.S. General Surgery, M.Ch. Urology), Urologist & Andrologist, Kanpur. General information only — it does not replace a personal consultation. In an emergency go to the nearest hospital.

Kidney stones tend to recur, so prevention matters just as much as treatment. Dr. Saurabh Singh, Urologist in Kanpur, shares practical diet and lifestyle changes that lower your risk of forming new stones.

1. Drink Enough Water

Low urine output is one of the biggest risk factors for stones. Aim for at least 2.5 to 3 litres of water a day, more if you sweat heavily or live in a hot climate like Kanpur’s summer. Pale yellow urine is a good sign you are well hydrated.

2. Limit Salt Intake

High sodium intake increases calcium in the urine, which raises the risk of calcium-based stones. Cut down on processed foods, papad, pickles and excess table salt.

3. Moderate Animal Protein

Too much red meat, eggs and seafood can increase uric acid and calcium levels in urine. This does not mean cutting protein entirely, but keeping portions balanced.

4. Get Enough Calcium from Food

It sounds counterintuitive, but dietary calcium from milk, curd and paneer actually binds oxalate in the gut and reduces stone risk. It is calcium supplements, not food calcium, that can increase risk if taken in excess.

5. Limit High-Oxalate Foods

Spinach, beetroot, nuts and chocolate are high in oxalate, which can combine with calcium to form stones. These foods are not banned, but should be eaten in moderation, ideally with a calcium-rich food alongside.

6. Reduce Sugary Drinks

Sugary sodas and excess fructose have been linked to higher kidney stone risk. Replacing these with water or fresh lime water (without excess salt) is a simple change.

7. Know Your Stone Type

Not all stones are the same. Calcium oxalate, uric acid, struvite and cystine stones each have different dietary triggers. A stone analysis after treatment helps tailor the right prevention plan.

When to See a Urologist

If you have had a kidney stone before, or have a family history of stones, a personalised prevention plan can significantly reduce the chance of recurrence.
