Not all kidney stones need the same treatment. The right procedure depends on the size, location and type of stone, as well as the patient’s overall health. Dr. Saurabh Singh, Urologist in Kanpur, breaks down the three most common kidney stone treatments.
RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery)
RIRS uses a thin, flexible scope passed through the natural urinary passage, with no cuts on the body. A laser breaks the stone into dust, which is then cleared naturally. It is ideal for stones up to around 2 cm, especially those inside the kidney, and typically allows same-day or next-day discharge.
PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy)
PCNL is used for larger or more complex stones. A small puncture is made in the back to reach the kidney directly and remove the stone. It is highly effective for large stones but involves a slightly longer hospital stay than RIRS.
ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy)
ESWL uses focused shock waves from outside the body to break the stone into smaller fragments, which then pass naturally in the urine. It is non-invasive and works best for smaller stones in favourable positions, though it may need more than one session.
Quick Comparison
| Treatment | Best For | Incision | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| RIRS | Stones up to ~2 cm, kidney stones | None (scope-based) | 1-2 days |
| PCNL | Large or complex stones | Small puncture | 2-4 days |
| ESWL | Small stones, favourable position | None | Same day, may need repeat sessions |
How Dr. Saurabh Singh Decides
The right option is chosen after reviewing your scan reports, stone size and location, kidney function and overall health. Many patients in Kanpur prefer RIRS laser surgery for its minimally invasive nature and quick recovery.
