RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is a minimally invasive way to treat kidney stones, and recovery is usually quick. Dr. Saurabh Singh, Urologist in Kanpur, explains what patients can expect after the procedure.
Immediately After Surgery
Most patients are observed for a few hours after the procedure and can often go home the same day or the next morning. A thin tube called a DJ stent is usually placed temporarily to help urine drain freely while the ureter heals.
Common Symptoms in the First Few Days
- Mild burning or discomfort while urinating
- Occasional blood-tinged urine, which should gradually clear
- A feeling of urgency to urinate, caused by the stent
- Mild lower back or flank discomfort
These symptoms are generally temporary and improve with prescribed medication and time.
Caring for Yourself at Home
- Drink plenty of water to flush the urinary system
- Take prescribed pain relief and antibiotics as directed
- Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for the first week
- Watch for fever, severe pain or heavy bleeding, and contact your doctor if these occur
When Is the Stent Removed?
The DJ stent is usually removed in a quick outpatient procedure, typically within one to two weeks after surgery, once healing is confirmed.
Follow-Up Care
A follow-up ultrasound or scan is usually done to confirm the stone has been fully cleared and the kidney is draining normally. This is also a good opportunity to discuss prevention strategies based on your stone type.
When to Contact Your Doctor
- Fever above 101°F
- Severe, worsening pain
- Heavy bleeding in urine
- Inability to urinate
