Urinary problems in children can worry parents, but most are manageable with the right evaluation. Dr. Saurabh Singh, Pediatric Urologist in Kanpur, explains the most common issues seen in young patients.
Bedwetting (Nocturnal Enuresis)
Many children wet the bed well past the age when their peers have stopped. While often simply due to delayed bladder control development, persistent bedwetting beyond age 5-6 should be evaluated to rule out underlying causes.
Urinary Tract Infections in Children
UTIs in children can present differently than in adults, sometimes with fever, irritability or loss of appetite rather than classic burning sensation. Recurrent UTIs in children need evaluation to check for structural issues in the urinary tract.
Undescended Testicle
When one or both testicles have not moved into the scrotum by birth or early infancy, timely evaluation and, if needed, surgical correction is important for future fertility and to reduce long-term risks.
Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR)
This is a condition where urine flows backward from the bladder into the kidneys, which can increase the risk of kidney infections and, if severe, kidney damage. It is often diagnosed after a child has recurrent UTIs.
Hypospadias
This is a birth condition where the opening of the urethra is not at the tip of the penis. It is usually corrected with surgery, ideally performed in early childhood.
